A&D Students Come Together to Raise Money "...for the children" of the WTC Disaster.
Artists are known not only for their creativity but also for their sensitivity to the sufferings of humankind. This certainly holds true for the students of Art and Design. ____Even though the school, in Manhattan, is not near Ground Zero, the students were very aware of and affected by the tragedy that struck that day. Like the rest of NYC's adults, they too felt the need to do something to help. At the end of September, the students decided to take up a collection during their lunch periods, raising $500 in cash.
____Many come from homes where both parents work, and a great number travel to the school from outer boroughs and work after school to pay for their art supplies, so the contributions were not easily afforded.
But Roxanna Tineo, a senior at A&D, said it best when she spoke for all during the press conference," We did it for the children". The Art and Design Alumni Association, in response to the students' efforts, added another $500 in matching funds.
Alumnus Lucky Holmes arranged for the press conference held on that Tuesday, October 2nd, at Art & Design .
____The money [and checks] were "presented" with WPIX/Fox-5 TV, Channel1, Bloomberg Radio, and reporters from Japan and Columbia University covering the event. In attendance were also representatives of the NYPD, Marine Corps, and New York State Troopers, the school's principal, and the Alumni Association president and vice president.
