Snapshots of Tragedy Raise $14,000

Photo-journalist Patrick Rivera (Class of 1977), has raised more than $14,000 with the sale of photos taken on September 11th.
____On the morning of 9/11, Patrick was at work at E-pix Photo Digital, where he is a partner. Seeing the first tower hit, the photo-journalist in him kicked in and he rushed to the 14th floor of a nearby building on West 28th Street to take photos of the Twin Towers after the first plane had struck. As the film was being processed the second plane hit the South Tower and the buildings began to collapse. He wound up with photos of the towers as they disappeared in sequence.

____Rivera immediately placed the photos in the store's window, with a flag and a prayer, in response to many who passed by in tears. But shortly thereafter people began coming in to ask to buy prints of the small photos. He first declined to sell them, but when requests continued, he reconsidered and decided he could raise funds with the sales for those who suffered losses in the tragedy. Three other photographer-friends were asked to contribute photos to the display, the store staff offered their help in organizing the prints, and the other partners donated the supplies.
____More than 700 images were reviewed, and many were rejected as too sensitive for sale. A final 89 were selected and placed on display. The demand for the prints was phenomenal. The 3-panel exhibit was ultimately removed from the store's windows on Sunday, October 21st, with sales continuing throughout the day until closing.
____Patrick donated the funds the Daily News Fund, The American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the UFA Widows' and Children's Fund, the NY Police and Fire Widow's and Children's Fund, and the September 11th Fund.
____To assure those who purchased the prints that their payments were indeed donated to charity, copies of the money orders -- all made out for $700 each -- were placed in the store's window, next to the exhibit panels.
____The prints have become a traveling exhibit. Currently, an exhibit of his prints and those of the 4 friends who contributed photos to the original display will be on view at the Middle Collegiate Church, at 50 East 7th Street, through October 4th. The opening is on Sunday, September 8th, from 12:30 to 3 pm . Even Governor George Pataki has requested a print!
