I am in my Web Page Class right now and we were given an assignment to find the best web page. One of my classmates picked yours. We are supposed to look through it and decide if we like it ourselves. So far, it is very intersesting. I like how it is simple, yet grabs your attention. Good Work!!!!!!!!!!

We are currently viewing several internet sites in my web page class. A pupil of mine, this is her favorite web page because of the color contrasting and how easy it is to navigate. So, keep up the excellent work on it! ~kelley

THE FORCE IS WITHIN US. Cowardly acts do not rule our lives. I took the call to serve my country prior to graduating with the class of 75. We're all very proud to have been part of a school with so much heritage and talents. My major was in architecture and interior design, which made the recent horrific scenes along with the many lives that were lost a nauseating experience. I say to all of you, don't let this control our ability to rebuild the very foundation we are made of. Shaped by those that taught us to be who we are today, we need to mold into the masterpieces the world is yet to see. Be it by plane, train, bus or car and even if I end up having to walk it all the way from Miami to my beloved birthplace, I will be there, present and accounted for, and so should you. Our fallen brothers and sisters deserve our unity along with the pride to have been together, please don't let them down. See you all there. Felix Cruz - Class of 75

OUR GRATITUDE AND THANKS to all who have given blood and volunteered to help us in our recovery. This includes the effort of Chief Warrant Officer 2, National Guard, Jean (John) Poitevien, Class of 1982, who has been clearing debris at Ground Zero since Wednesday, Sept. 12th. In his message to us he wrote, "It's unfortunate that it takes something like this to unite people, but at least we have everyone working together." If Jean gets time off to attend our event on October 4th he will be there in uniform. Our hearts may have been broken but our spirit and will to go on have not.

Class of '80. Attending A&D was the smartest decision I made as a teen. I got my 1st reunion notice the day after the attack on the U.S. My heart spoke out - go home to the city that my heart still beats for and go to this once in a lifetime reunion.

WE REMAIN COMMITTED. The Alumni Association would like to thank all of you who have been supportive and requested we hold our event as planned, and those of you new to our website who are signing up to attend. Our get-together the beginning of next month is not just to celebrate our past, and our wonderful high school, but to remember those friends and faculty who did not make the journey with us, as well as give us an opportunity to express our feelings for the victims of this past week's devastating tragedy. This is a time for healing and a time for hope. We look forward to joining with you in this endeavor. Our thoughts will be with each of you who are unable to be there that night. We wish you peace, health and hapiness. And long live the High School of Art & Design.

I'm sending out a prayer for all my fellow New Yorkers, even though I no longer live there....that all is well after the planes that crashed into the Twin Towers. For those who may have lost a loved one, may God bless you and give you strength. For any Alumni we may have lost, we love and will miss you. My prayers are with you all. It's time this nation as a whole turned back to the ONE source that always gives us hope and strength, GOD Almight.

It's been great finding this A&D web site and seeing all of the Alumni still doing so well. Especially the class of "76....go bi-centennial. I'd love to be there for the reunion, but it doesn't look like I can make it. When I so some of the names on the guest book (Cindy Cherry; Cindy Medina; Dan Johson) it brought back alot a memories. If any of my old pals are out there, drop me a line Mike Anthony; Lonnie; Melvin; Kenny; Fred; Jamie; Awilda; Gwen) WOW, the names could go on. Take care.........Lance T.

Class of '62!! What a treat it will be to be at my first High School Reunion....whew!!. I'm almost getting goosebumps. I was fortunate enough to be the first class to experience both the High School of Industrial Arts at the annex on 51st St & Lexington and then moving into the new "high rise" as we now call it High School of Art & Design. It was a unigue blend.....an experience I will never forget. Architecture was my thing back in '61 and '62.....then through college and even now as I speak.
I love it! I wish more of my gradating class will attend...it's a once in a life time thing.....don't ever miss it .....believe me!

Hi Everone:
This is Tony DiLorenzo from Class of 1957. I hear from Angela Marino about this great get together, however I'm waiting to hear from others. I'm on page 12 of the alumni
book. Does anyone rememember Frances Donohue & her extra long nails? She was ahead of her time. She wore rubber gloves in modeling class so the clay would not get under the nails. Frances, where the hell are you? Where is Renee Wolf, my graduation partner? Where is Nick LoBianco and Ruth
Rothenberg? Where is Frank Cappello & Lenore Bernstein?
Now, let me make a correction from my stepdaughter, Kerry
Roth Provenzano. She said that I graduated from SIA in 1939-
that's the year I was born. I'm not that old! Someone please write to me.

I graduated with the class of 1969. My major was Package Design & Advertising Production Workshop. The 4 years i spent at A&D were the best. It opened a whole new world for me, meeting different people from everywhere in the city.
I have remained in the graphic arts by working for a printing company, as a customer service rep for all the major advertising agencies. I have been working for the same company for 32 years. First as a typographer and now handling all pre-press 4 color ads, posters, brochures...
I have used all the training I received at A&D and am thankful for it.

Gee Whiz, where did the years go? Silk Screen major, Class of '53, Still remember good old SIA; bumming Luckies in front of the school, visiting art museums en masse, drawing sessions at the church on 109th and Amsterdam, yes!, dancing at lunch time, pallying around with Al Alvarez and John Killgrew, graduating just in time for Korea action, anybody remembers if we had a school year? Life did not allow me to pursue an artistic career but the early fifties at SIA are some of my fondest memories. Any of my friends out there? Please contact me. I may not be able to make it to reunion, but with heart and soul, I'll be there. Kudos to all for the great site!

I will always remember my days at A&D with great fondness, it was truly on all levels an immeasurable and rewarding experience. My Classmates of 1965
were an extraordinary group of individuals, singularly
talented and inspiring, a Class that I am very proud to
have been a part of. I am looking forward to the opportunity of reuniting with them and sharing some smiles at the "Grand Reunion", and I would very much enjoy hearing from any of them.

Graduate of 1973. I am glad to know there is a web site dedicated to A&D. I think that it would be great to have a listing similar to Classmates.com or Gradfinder.com (where informations and pictures can be listed for free) on this site. I don't think many alumni know A&D site exist and a link on these .com would help a lot.

In the Annex on 51st Street there were classrooms that actually were in the building on 52nd Street. To get to these classes you had to walk through a corridor and down four or five steps to the back of the other building. This corridor was covered on the sides and top by the corrugated metal used for emergency construction. It was always cold since there was no heat in this passageway and the corridor became known as "Pneumonia Alley." If I remember correctly, the pottery and jewelry classes were held here and the kiln was located in this "annex of the Annex."

It has been suggested by Michael Cheverino, our 1st Vice President, that we create a scholarship award in Alan Hipwell's name, to be given to a top photography student at graduation this coming Tuesday, June 26th. Class of "53. I am so excited to find this site. I have already spoken to Gerda Furst and I am definitely going to the reunion. I remember my stint at SIA with such affection. Those years were so much fun. I remember the dancing at lunch time & Wild Bill Wayne (Mr. Weintraub), the trips to Central Park when it was too hot to stay in the building and the time we all went to the beach. With it all, we did learn and I went on to attend Hunter College, worked for awhile, married for awhile and now a working grandma. Sadly, not doing anything in the art field but I am working for a theatrical agency. I hope to hear from more of the '53 group! See you at the reunion!

I will always have fond memories of SIA. Playing handball
against a coragated wall, playing basketball, where half the backboard was against a brick wall, very dangerous.
And huge group of professionals that made wonderful careers in the advertising business.

What a great site!
Not a day goes by without at least one thought of SIA and A&D. I was in the class of '61, the only class to attend school in all three buildings, the annex the main building and the "new building". I hope to see you at the Gala Reunion in October.

At last there's a way to find fellow A&D-ers! I've been to
my husband's 25th reunion, but had no way of finding out about my own. I'm from the class of `69, my sister Janet and I were one of the four sets of twins in that class.
Janet is down in Mississippi now, has her own pottery studio, and I've been up in Seacoast New Hampshire, had a
custom B&W photo lab, and until recently have worked as a custom framer. For now, I'm a Girl Scout Leader for 10 girls
and having a blast!
Janet sent me the e-address for this site, and reading through the guest book I saw Dianne Nappi, who used to ride the ferry with us, Hi, Diane! Where are James Mason, Arthur,
Felix? Ellen Yankowitz, Lisa Klinghoffer, Michael Mastros,
Ingrid Rose, Frances Brown, Stanley Scherer? I've seen Harvey on television and in the movies. Where are Madeline
and Martha Grossman?
I'm hoping to come to the reunion,to see some of you there.

Wow, my head's still in a cloud! All these years I thought I'd never hear again about the best time of my life, my time at A&D. I graduated in 1977 (great year!) and I majored in silkscreen. I wonder if Mrs. Glicksman's still around, as well as all my school buddy's. As soon as I graduated I went to work for a large sign shop, with their help I opened a Screen Print department for them. My horizons broadened a bit two years later when i moved to Tampa, Florida. Here I have also graduated from Graphic Artist to Art Director for an ever growing Screen Printing company. We've been together for 17 years now. I was a little upset hearing other friends having 5, 10, 15 year reunions but hearing nothing from my alma mater. This is ALL changed now!. What a great web site! Full of connections and information for the world to see and hear, and it's all about what I tell people in Tampa is the greatest school EVER! Hopefully soon someone will take the cue from N.Y. and build one here. I have seen different Graduates and curricula from local trade Schools and Colleges but they pale when compared to our High School schedule. I honestly wish I could go back in some form or function. Please advise if any ideas arise, I'm open to suggestions.
God Bless You All!!, with all your concerted efforts you've done a wonderful job of keeping the dream alive for myself and all our future "Artistic Professionals". ...Feel free to keep in touch. I hopefully will plan to attend the Grand Reunion. See you there!...I am sooo jazzed I can't wait!

I graduated from SIA in June 1949. My name was Miriam Goodman. I was a sculpture and ceramics major. My teacher was Albino Cavalito. The year I graduated, I had the good fortune to meet the philosophy Aesthetic Realism, founded by Eli Siegel. I am proud to be a consultant on the faculty of the Aesthetic Realism Foundation in New York City. I have a happy life. My care for the arts has grown and flourished. I hope to hear from you! I am a graduate of 1981. My major was Architecture. After graduation I went to Buffalo State College and RIT. I have a BS in Electronic Engineering and now supervise several Engineers in my company. Although Architecture was not my career it still played a very important role in my life. I use drafting every day to perform my job. Going to the High School of Art and Design was the stepping stone to my career. This year will be my 20th reunion. I still do not know if any of my fellow classmates are having a reunion to celebrate it!

I graduated from SIA in 1958. The placement service at the school sent me for an interview at Archie Comics. That was 42 years ago and I'm now the Vice President/Managing Editor. I've also been trying to locate a copy of the year book, but have not been successful. Any suggestions?

Here's praying that this event is a success as SIA was.
My year of graduation was Jan. 1959
Oh Great Spirit
Whose breath gives life to all the world...
Hear me, I am small and weak...
I need your strength and wisdom...
Teach me the lessons You have hidden
under every leaf and rock...
Give me the strength -- not to be greater
than my brother...
but to fight my greatest enemy -- Myself.
Let me walk in beauty and ever behold
the red and purple sunset...
and when the setting sunset fades --
may I come to You with clean hands, straight eyes,
and no shame!
Respectfully yours;

All I ever wanted to do was draw! I realized that art was always my best "subject" and very few kids in school would bother the "class artist", that is if you drew them hot rods and naked girls. I recall taking the train into the city for the test and interview. Alot was riding on this day. My choice was to attend the local High School with the same kids who I was fighting and hiding my money on a daily basis.
Also, it was a chance to see how I measured up to hundreds of other kids from the city. I wanted to know if I was as good
or not. The day I was notified that my application was accepted to A&D is etched in my mind, along with the proud moments my kids will surprise me with every now and then.
Their was so much to learn, so many talented students, friends and teachers. I'll always be gratefull for the opportunity I had at A&D. It was a great time for me.

This is great! I can't wait until more A & D people find out about this site! Denise Caban of '89, if you are the same Denise that was in Spark and was a Travel Agent for a couple of years after graduating, drop me a email or a message on the board. I would love to hear from you. That goes for all the classes of '86 thru '93 who remember me as a student and later on as a Spark counselor at A & D.

I, too, attended that "Silver Anniversary" at A&D in the spring of 1985. I also saw few of my own classmates. People were rushing into the building, looking for each other. It was somewhat chaotic, and the one great thing was seeing our founding principal, John B Kenny, for the last time -- at the ceremony in the auditorium. The event was hosted by the previous alumni association. This reunion is far more organized -- as you can tell -- and we will do our best to help you find your friends. With all of you helping us, we can make this the greatest get-together in the school's history! Looking forward to meeting all of you. Yvonne Fitzner, Class of 1960.

Hello to Terrianne! Alan just "colorized" your yearbook photo (1961) You look fabulous ... so much better in color than in B&W. He called it your latest incarnation (what does that mean?). He spent the whole evening getting all the photo pages ready for the new A&D alumni site, and added your latest photo to them.

Hi everyone! I'm from the class of '65. I am really excited about this reunion. It's been almost 36 years and I still talk about A&D and Mr. Kenny with lots of love! I would love to communicate with my old buddies. There were so many. Does anyone know where to contact Mr. John Gaydos? He's not in the Manhattan phonebook. He was my beloved Illustration teacher who really made a great impact on my life and I would love to tell him that. Thanks to all of those who made this all happen. See you all at the reunion...Jess

Anyone from the class of '85 out there?!?!!? come out, come out, where ever you are!
Who could forget: T-squares and Triangles, the S.O. store with its strangely long lines, cheap windbreakers with the school logo on the back, 10th period art classes, breakdancing, graffitti wars, and the big student walk out of '85 ( hey, what was that walk out about again?!?!) and cutting out at the bagel shop across the street or at the MacDonald on Third avenue!!!
And remember Mr. Vogel, Ms. Whol, Mr. Jellyneck, or making up art classes at FIT, or Visual Arts on the weekend or at night!!
Oh to be young and dumb again - youth is wasted on the young.
